Missourians Look Down On Kansans
Tuesday, June 07, 2005
The bumper sticker said, "Kansas - as bigoted as you think." The car carrying that message sported Missouri tags, I spotted it downtown last week.
Friends, we contemplate a sad and sorry state when the citizens of Missouri look down upon us.
If you've been reading the Kansas City Star letters, you know that other states feel the same way.
We joined a pathetic company of other backwards states when we passed an amendment enshrining a narrow, politically conservative religious definition of marriage in our constitution. The "debate" over evolution confirms this view.
It's worth noting the Bible contains many models of marriage. Solomon had 700 wives; many of the other patriarchs of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) had multiple wives and maids. So the newly minted amendment doesn't really represent a good understanding of the Christian Holy Book.
Kansas... as bigoted as you think.
